Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Jordyn

Jordyn is an invented spelling of the name Jordan, probably with the intention of feminizing the moniker. The name Jordan comes from the River Jordan derived from the Hebrew word “ha-yarden” meaning ‘flowing down.’ John the Baptist baptized Christ in the River Jordan, so in the Middle Ages Christians would pilgrimage to the Holy Land and bring a container of water back with them. Children (male and female) who were baptized with this holy water were often given the name Jordan. From an etymology perspective, one might think Jordan is the transferred use of a surname, when in fact it originated as a given name. Some of the earlier medieval versions of the name were Jordanis and Jourdain. Eventually it became a surname, derived from the given name. However, the name Jordyn is a made-up spelling variation distinct to the United States.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME JORDYN

The name Jordan is inarguably unisex in America, although it’s more common as a male name. However, the Jordyn version is more popular with the girls (seven-times more popular, in fact). Still, Jordyn was essentially an invented spelling probably meant to feminize the name, thus securing it for little girls (although parents are still using this spelling for boys, too). The name first appeared on the U.S. popularity charts as a girls’ name in 1989 and made some pretty swift moves up the list in 10 short years (over 800 positions). The name has never made the Top 100 list for girls, but it’s getting close. However, if you combine all the variations of this popular name, we’d suspect its usage is far more wide-spread than you’d think. American parents love these androgynous names for their little daughters, so they keep creating variations to mark their territory (Jordyn, Jorden, Jordin and Jordon). We believe it’s a fleeting fad, but can’t deny its current appeal.
