The historic popularity of Jorge as a male given name in America has clearly been driven by the steadily growing Latino/Hispanic population. The name first entered the U.S. popularity charts in 1927 and advanced up the list slowly but surely. The high point of the name’s popularity came mainly in the 1990s. At the turn of this century, the name Jorge is slipping back down the charts having never achieved a Top 100 ranking on the list of most commonly used boys’ names in the United States. Jorge, like its English counterpart George, is a name of endurance and stamina – the appeal is universal. As such, we don’t expect these names to venture too far down the charts before settling at a respectable ranking. While Jorge is not as popular as some other distinctly Spanish male names in America (like Jose, Angel, Xavier, Juan, Luis, Diego, Jesús or Carlos) it is nonetheless a heavily used name within the Spanish-speaking population specifically. Not surprisingly, Jorge has achieved a spot on the Top 100 list of most popular boys’ names in the states of California and Texas where there is a strong concentration of Latinos/Hispanics.
