Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Joy

Joy is the English vocabulary word that defines extreme happiness or elevated pleasure. It’s synonymous with words like delight, elation and bliss. The English originally borrowed the word “joie” (delight, gladness) from the Norman French in the Middle Ages, which was ultimately derived from the Latin “gaudia”. The word joy also has religious meaning for some, denoting a certain spiritual elation and rejoice (many religious hymns use this word). As a female given name Joy has been in regular use since the late 19th century when other virtue names came into vogue. Today the name Joy is most popular in the Netherlands (Holland).

Personality

OF THE GIRL NAME JOY

The number Five personality loves the excitement of life and can easily adapt to all situations. As natural adventurers, these personalities thrive on the new and unexpected and prefer to be in constant motion. It makes them feel alive. They'll stir up some action if there's not enough around, and as inherent risk-takers they enjoy pushing the envelope. Naturally rebellious, the Five personality has no fear and never resists change.  Traveling and new experiences feed their souls. Fives are very social and attract friends with ease. People love to be around the Five fun-loving and exciting energy.  This is also a lucky number in numerology (like the Threes), so fortune seems to shine on them, helped along by their own optimism and good-nature. Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME JOY

The name Joy dates back to 1885 on the American female naming charts. By the 1940s, the name was used with solid and respectable moderation. This lasted for several more decades through the 50s, 60s and 70s. In fact, Joy’s peak popularity came in 1974 when she almost (but not quite) landed a spot on the Top 100 list of most favored girl names in the United States (she reached #109 on the charts that year). Joy is a very sweet name that conveys the emotions and values of her parents. Like other virtue names (Grace, Faith, Hope), Joy is transparently obvious and strongly positive in its meaning. We love that Joy is a name that corresponds with the Number Five in numerology – the joy-of-life number – how fitting! It seems that with a name like Joy, your little girl is destined for happiness (if not, then her name will be a source of glaring irony). What more could a parent want than happiness for their child? Because Joy is such a simple, obvious, one-syllable name, many people prefer it as a middle name instead of a first name. Either way, it’s just one of those names that puts a smile on your face – like it or not!

Lena is a character in Amy Tan’s best-selling 1989 novel, The Joy Luck Club, which has also been adapted into a film and a play. Lena is the daughter of Ying-Ying, a girl born in China in the Year of the Tiger, whose natural spirit has been repressed by her culture. She passes on her fears to Lena, the child of her and her American husband. Lena is also born in the Year of the Tiger, but she grows to be a woman like her mother, fearful and anxious and bowing to the will of the males in her life. Trapped in a loveless marriage and emulating her mother’s behavior, Lena begins to realize how the story of her mother’s life has affected her own. At the same time, Ying-Ying is beginning to understand how her own actions, or lack thereof, have affected her daughter. It is in the power of communication, no matter how fraught with emotion, that empathy and understanding can work their healing on Lena.
