Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Joziah

Joziah is a jazzed up version of Josiah, a Hebrew masculine name borne from the Bible, specifically in 2 Kings 22-23, and whose name means "Jehovah (God) heals". Josiah lived during the 7th century BC. and, at the ripe old age of eight, became the King of Judah (upon the assassination of his father, the result of an unpopular reign). Despite his youth, Josiah went on to become one of Judah’s greatest kings. He is best remembered for initiating reforms following the discovery of a scroll, the Law of Moses, and returning his people to the worship of Yahweh alone. It is reported in the Bible that there was never a king like Josiah “who turned to the Lord with all of his heart and with all of his soul and with all of his might, according to the Law of Moses.” [2 Kings 23:25]. Unfortunately, Josiah would later die in battle against the Egyptians, but not before God successfully used him as an instrument of His “healing” of the people of Judah. The name, while always popular among Jewish people, was adopted by the Puritans after the Reformation. Josiah is now commonly used among Jews and Christians alike. Joziah with a “z” is just another possible spelling.
