Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Julianne

Julianne is either a feminized form of the masculine Julian or it’s simply the modern marriage between the names Julie and Anne. A 20th century creation, Julianne can be added to the long list of names ultimately inspired by the ancient Roman Julius family. Most notably borne by Emperor Gaius Julius Caesar in the first century B.C. of “veni, vidi, vici” fame, Julius and his off-shoot names could be considered among the most successful non-Biblical names EVER. The Latins borrowed the name from the Greek “ioulos” (meaning “downy-bearded”) while the Latin word for “‘youthful” is “juvenalis” – therefore the Julius names have come to mean “soft-haired and youthful”. Furthermore, some etymologists believe that Julius could be connected to “Jovilius” which means “descended from Jove (also known as Jupiter)” who was the supreme god in Roman mythology. The clan Julius (Gens Julia) also believed themselves to be descended from Aeneas by way of his son Julus. In any case, this prominent and patrician Old Roman family gave birth to all of the “Julius”-related names in his many feminized forms: Julia, Julie, Juliana, Juliet, etc. While the aforementioned examples have been around for centuries, compounded forms like Julianna, Julianne and Julissa are much more modern. Today the lovely Julianne is most popular in Quebec, Canada.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME JULIANNE

Julianne first appeared on the U.S. female naming charts in 1930 – a year in which both Julia and Anne were Top 100 favorite baby girl names. It seems natural that Julianne would follow. Pretty Julianne never made it to the big leagues, but she did grow to moderate popularity fairly quickly and was bestowed semi-frequently in the 1960s and early 70s. As the name began to wane in the early 1980s, abruptly she reversed her course on the charts between 1984 and 1985 as Julianne jumped a remarkable 330 positions in two short years. What was all the fuss? A model-turned-actress named Julianne Phillips saw intense media coverage over her relationship and short-lived marriage to Bruce Springsteen (then at the top of his career). So the name was splashed all over the news which brought the pretty three-syllable Julianne back into the minds on expectant parents. Now that we’ve crossed into the 21st century, Julianne has been replaced by the even more flowery four-syllable Juliana. Talented actress Julianne Moore (b. Julie Anne Smith) and the beautiful triple threat Julianne Hough have helped to maintain interest in the name, but really Julianne has become one of the least favorite forms of the female Julius names today. No doubt we’ll see a comeback in a few decades, but right now American parents are favoring the more fanciful options of Julia, Julian(n)a, Jillian, Juliet(te) and Giuliana.
