Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Julissa

Julissa is an interesting name. It appears to have been a late 20th century American invention created through the combination of Julie and Lisa, two hugely popular names of the 1960s and 70s. Julia comes from the old Roman family name Julius meaning ‘soft-haired, youthful’ and also ‘descended from Jove’ (Jove being another name for the Roman god Jupiter). Lisa, on the other hand, is a short form of Elizabeth which comes from the Hebrew meaning ‘God is my oath’. Julissa is therefore a modern invention used mainly in the United States.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME JULISSA

Julissa first appeared on the female naming charts in 1969. That just happened to be the year that Lisa was the #1 most popular girl’s name in America while Julie stood in impressive 12th place. It’s not surprising given American parents’ penchant for inventing names that Julissa would appear in that particular year. At first, the name did not see immediate success and in fact fell off the charts for most of the late 1970s and well into the 80s. The name successfully returned to the charts in the 1990s, but there was one make-or-break year for Julissa and that was 1997. That was the year that Texas wholeheartedly embraced this name and made it a Top 100 favorite in their state. The name catapulted on the charts nationwide that year, and yet it’s not clear why. Julissa had that one good year and now she’s back to lower levels of moderate use. It’s a cute name with a unique sound. We also find it ironically charming that Julissa combines a name from the pagan days of Rome (in homage to Jove) with a name that is distinctly monotheistic from the Bible, i.e., Elizabeth (God is my oath). It gives Julissa an unintended religious yin-yang quality. We like that.
