Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Kaeden

Kaeden is one of the many – and we mean MANY – Americanized respellings of Caden, a name purportedly derived from a Scottish surname, Mac Cadáin, from the Gaelic “Cadáin” thought to mean “battler, fighter” (the etymology remains up for debate). Other etymologists have concluded that Cadáin is an old Gaelic form of Adam, which is a Hebrew name from the Bible (of course) and means “ground, earth”. The MacCadáin clan was historically responsible for maintaining and managing the church land in their Scottish localities, a position they held from late medieval times into the early modern era (which would lend the name nicely toward Adam’s meaning; i.e., taking care of the church “ground”). The reality with the name Caden, however, is that it was probably invented as an alternate to all those other “-aden” names (Jayden, Brayden, Hayden, Aiden, blah, blah, blah). Caden is a very modern given name, coined in the early 1990s and mostly distinct to the United States (although these names are used with occasional frequency in Canada and Australia, as well).
