Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Kael

Kael is a respelled version of Cáel, an ancient Irish name, from the Irish-Gaelic adjective “caol” meaning “slender”. It was borne by a mythical character in Irish folklore. Cáel was a member of the Fianna, the legendary Irish warriors who, led by Fionn Mac Cumaill (Finn MacCool), protected their homeland of Éire (Ireland). According to legend, Cáel fell in love with a Dannan woman named Créde the Fair (Dannan were known as the “people of the goddess Danu”, among the first Gaelic people to arrive in Ireland). Créde was one of the fairest women in all of Ireland, always turning away her many eager suitors. It was Cáel who finally gripped her heart and won her hand with his beautiful, mesmerizing poetry. Créde joined Cáel at the Battle of Ventry, a battle where Fionn Mac Cumaill called upon the Fianna to defend Ireland against foreign invaders from mainland Europe. During the course of the seventeen day battle, Cáel tragically drowned as he pursued his enemy to sea. During his burial, the grief-stricken Créde lay down next to her deceased husband and died of sorrow. Cáel remains an obscure Irish masculine name; it no longer shows up on any English-speaking baby name lists. However, it was recently resurrected in the United States, probably in reaction to similar sounding names Kale and Cale (which, by the way, have no etymological connection).

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME KAEL

It’s hard to tell what attracted American parents to names like Cale, Kale, Cael and Kael in the first place. They come from different sources, really. Cale came first in 1969, probably inspired by a nickname for Caleb. Kale came next in 1985, but this name is generally pronounced “KAH-leh” since it’s the Hawaiian equivalent of Karl/Charles. The Irish name Cáel followed in 2002 but, technically speaking, is pronounced more like “KEEL” in its mother tongue (although most Americans are probably saying “KAYL”). Kael is the last of these four-lettered, similar looking names to come along (2006). So we guess it just depends on what definition parents are after and where their spelling and pronunciation preferences lie.
