Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Kamari

Kamari is a name which African-Americans adopted from the East African Swahili language (Kamaria) which in turn was borrowed from the Arabic word “qumar” meaning “moon”. After consulting with a Swahili dictionary, we also learned that the word “kamari” means “gambling” referring to any game played for money. Kamari is new to the 21st century among English speakers and used mainly within the African-American community in the United States. The name is primarily bestowed on baby boys, but occasionally it’s given to girls (although not enough to remain on the popularity charts). For this reason, we consider Kamari primarily masculine.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME KAMARI

Kamari first appeared on the male naming charts in America in the year 2003. It has since climbed from complete obscurity to levels of mild moderation. In other words, less than 1,000 baby boys are named Kamari in any given year. The name did show up briefly for girls in the years 2008 and 2009 but has since disappeared from the female charts. We get how Kamari sounds gender-neutral, but we definitely like this name better for boys. Since the name is ethnically African and generally restricted to the Black community in the U.S., we don’t expect to see Kamari become much more popular. It will always remain a unique and original name. It’s a great choice for a boy born on the night of a full moon or for risk-taking parents who like a little “gamble” in their lives.
