Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Karma

Karma is a concept which developed in ancient India and comes from the Sanskrit word (कर्म) meaning “action, effect” from the root “kwer-“ meaning “to make, form”. Karma is essentially a Hindu or Buddhist philosophy that explains our fate or destiny. In other words, the sum of our actions in this lifetime will be carried forward into our next. The quality of our lives (our behaviors and our actions) will determine what form we will take in our reincarnated lives. The concept of karma is also used within our current lives in that our actions and behaviors will come back around to us in a more immediate way; i.e., negative actions will bring negativity back to us in some other shape (or positive behavior will yield positive effects). It’s a cyclical, continuous vibration of the universe and our participation in it – the natural laws of cause and effect. In other words: we reap what we sow. As a female given name Karma is quite modern and mainly used in North America and Australia (although very infrequently).

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME KARMA

Karma first appeared on the American charts in 2005 so the name hasn’t been in circulation for very long. It is still rarely used and resides near the bottom of the Top 1000 list of girl names. Karma is really an Eastern concept although some forms of Western spirituality embrace it – it’s really more holistic and places the responsibility of our actions and behaviors on ourselves. Therefore we don’t really see Karma as a name choice for religious people, per se, as much as spiritual people. It almost has a counterculture or hippie-like flavor to it. And even though Karma encompasses all types of actions and behaviors, it really has a positive overall sense about it. Really though Dharma would be a better name to consider if you want to focus entirely on the positive – this concept has more to do with the correct or positive ideals which keep the universe in its proper order.
