Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Katelyn

Katelyn is an American phonetic respelling of the traditional Irish girl’s name, Caitlín, which is the Celtic equivalent of Catherine. The name was brought to the British Isles in the Middle Ages by way of the Norman French version, Cateline. The Catherine family of names all derives from the Greek “Aikaterinë” (see Catherine) which translates to “pure one, clear, innocent.” The name was borne by an early saint who was martyred in Egypt and came to be associated with courage and purity, qualities that were attractive to the Celts. In Ireland, the Celtic version, Caitlín, proved popular and gave rise to the anglicized versions of K/Cathleen in England. The Irish legend of the Countess of Cathleen was put to pen by William Butler Yeats in 1892. Story goes that during a famine, the beautiful and fair-haired young countess offered her soul to the devil in exchange for food for the starving. Upon her death, the devil came to collect his due, but God interceded so Cathleen could go straight to heaven, so impressed was He that she would not only sacrifice her life, but her very salvation, for others.

The number Seven personality is deeply mystical and highly in tune with their spirituality. They operate on a different wavelength than the average joe. Spending time alone comes easily to Sevens, as it gives them time to contemplate philosophical, religious and spiritual ideas in an effort to find "real truth".  Sevens are wise, but often exude mystery as if they are tapped into something the rest of us don't understand. They love the outdoors and are fed by nature. Sevens are constantly seeking to understand human nature, our place in the universe, and the mystery of life in general. This makes them quite artistic and poetic, but they are also keen observers with high intellect - so they are equally scientific-minded. Sevens are charitable and care deeply about the human condition.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME KATELYN

Currently in America, Katelyn is the second most popular spelling of the traditional Caitlín; the first being “Kaitlyn.” Katelyn (as a spelling variant) first enters the U.S. popularity charts in 1981, so it was actually the first made-up spelling of the traditional Irish Caitlin. Today the amount of spelling variations of the name Caitlin is bordering on either insanity or absurdity. Americans are notorious for spelling alterations, and following the typical pattern, the first one to come out is usually the most phonetic; in this case, Katelyn. At this point, the name can almost be considered American rather than Irish, since both the spelling and the elocution are no longer the same as her Irish sister. The name is traditionally pronounced “Koit-leen” or “Kotch-leen” in Ireland – the pronunciation of “Kate-lyn” is more distinctly American. If you are of Irish descent, or a true admirer of Celtic tradition, we suggest you go with Caitlin over Katelyn. But we have to concede that Katelyn is the more preferred. We also can’t deny that it’s a very cute name!
