Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Katie

The name Katie originated as a pet form of the name Katherine or Kathleen. Katherine is the English form of the more typically French name Catherine, which was borne by a popular Christian saint martyred in Alexandria, Egypt in the 4th century, and a favorite in medieval times when the popularity of the name grew. The etymology of Katherine is debated, but she probably shares her roots with the name Hecate, Greek goddess of the wilderness, childbirth, and crossroads. Alternately, the Greek name “Aikaterina” has led to speculation that the name is derived from the Greek 'aikia,' meaning 'torture,' but this is not widely held (although St. Catherine was tortured at the wheel which might be from where this folk etymology originated). The 4th-Century Saint Catherine of Alexandria, nicknamed 'the pure one,' was a Christian martyr tortured on the wheel for upholding her religious beliefs. The name was associated with the Greek ‘katharos’' meaning 'pure.' Our modern use of the Greek-derived “catharsis,” (to purge or cleanse), also lends to C/Katherine's association with ideas of purity and innocence. The byname Katie developed into an independent name in her own right in the 20th century. The name is often paired with other names such as Katie-Ann, Katie-Louise, or Katie-Mae.

All About the Baby Name – Katie

Personality

OF THE GIRL NAME KATIE

The number one personality is a leader - strong and competitive. They are willing to initiate action and take risks. One personalities work hard toward their endeavors and have the ability to apply their creative and innovative thinking skills with strong determination. They believe in their ability to succeed and are too stubborn to be hindered by obstacles. Ones meet obstacles head-on with such mental vigor and energy that you better step aside. They resent taking orders, so don't try telling them what to do either. This is an intensely active personality, but they are also known as starters rather than finishers. They have a propensity to become bored and will move quickly to the next project if not properly challenged.  They are the ones to think up and put into action new and brilliant ideas, but they are not the ones to stick around and manage them. This personality has an enthusiastic and pioneering spirit. They are distinctly original.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME KATIE

Katie has been in use as an independent given name in America since the government began tracking naming trends back in 1880. In fact, the name was quite popular at the turn of the 20th century. After losing a spot on the Top 100 list in the late 1800s, Katie started her slow and steady decline on the charts. In the late 1960s, the name began to show signs of a comeback, and in 1978 she reestablished herself on the Top 100. The height of Katie’s popularity came in the 1980s during which time the name maintained a spot on the Top 50 list of most commonly used girl names. Her time on the Top 100 lasted a little more than 20 years and Katie fell off the list in 2001; she’s been slipping in popularity ever since. Katie appears to have stepped aside for the trendier (and arguably overused) Katelyn family of names. Nonetheless, Katie is a great choice. Having originated as a pet name gives it a cute and bubbly quality (think Katie Couric). It can be shortened to Kate for a stronger more dramatic resonance (think Kate Hepburn). Katie is a modern-day classic and risk-free choice.
