Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Kaya

Kaya can thank her name usage on the crazy-popular American Girl franchise. Since 1986, over 25 socially significant American Dolls have been released to eager 7-12 year old consumers nationwide. Incidentally, from a historical perspective, Kaya is the oldest of all the girls, dating back to the Native American Indian Nez Pierce tribe of 1764. Her real name is “Kaya'aton'my” which means “she who arranges rocks” in her native language. The lengthy Nez Pierce name was reduced down to Kaya in order to simplify the name for her young readers. Ironically, aside from Kaya’s connection with the wholesome American Girl Series, it also happens to be the Jamaican word for “marijuana” (as in Bob Marley’s 1978 reggae album and single titled “Kaya”). Hey folks, we’re just reporting the facts here – don’t kill the messenger. The mere paradox of that fact makes us love this name even more. Kaya may have also been influenced by the usage of Kaia or Kaiya (similar sounding but etymologically unrelated names).
