Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Kaylie

We’re calling this name Celtic in origin, although it’s more of an American invention, another respelling of Kaylee. Presumably Kaylee is derived from similar Irish names such as Keela or Keelin. Keelin comes from the Gaelic “Caoilfhinn” (pronounced kale + in) which translates into “slender” (caol) and “white, fair, pure” (finn). Keela, on the other hand, comes from the Gaelic word ‘cadhla’ which means a girl “so beautiful that only poets can describe her.” (i.e., a rare beauty). The names Kaylee, Kayley, Kaylie, etc. are of such recent origin that it’s difficult to ascertain the true etymological elements, particularly since it occurs in so many different spelling variations. It is also believed to be the transferred use of the anglicized Irish surname “O’Caollaidhe” (descendent of Caollaidhe). So we’re back to the meaning (caol) slender.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME KAYLIE

Kaylie appeared on the U.S. popularity charts in 1987 and has basically shadowed the success of Kaylee (a very high ranking female name in America today). As these “Kaylee” names became more popular, American parents keep trying to differentiate themselves (or their daughters) by making up more and more spelling variations. It’s gotten a little out of control in our opinion, and has caused a lot of spelling confusion among kindergarten teachers across the nation (as well as a bit of eye-rolling). Kaylie is probably the most phonetically sound spelling (after Kaylee), but don’t kid yourself if you think this name is unique just by changing a few vowels around. This is the type of name that appeals to simple, no-nonsense parents who like cutesy names (Kaylie, Bailey, Rylie, Haylie, Kylie, Callie, well, you get the picture). While these names are preciously darling, it’s hard to see them age into adulthood very gracefully. But then again, an entire generation of Kaylies will grow old together and by that time, it just may very well sound modern American. Who’s to say?
