Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Keagan

Keagan is a slight respelling of Keegan. Keegan is the transferred use of an anglicized Irish surname, from the Old Gaelic MacAodhagáin which was developed from the personal name Aodhagán (from Aodh). Aodh means “fire” and was the name of a Celtic pagan fire/sun god (the popular boy’s name Aidan comes from the same root). As a very early personal name, many other Irish names would eventually develop from Aodh and, believe it or not, Keegan was one of them. The distinguished MacAodhagain clan originated in the western central area of Ireland in present day County Galway, and they were high-ranking lawyers (the ancient law-giving kind) to the ruling families. A branch of this sept settled further east (closer to present-day Dublin) where their name was anglicized to Egan and then eventually to Keegan. As a given name, Keegan was adopted by the United States in the latter half of the 20th century. Keagan eventually sprung up on the American naming charts as an altered spelling of Keegan.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME KEAGAN

Keegan first came into use in 1979; Keagan didn’t follow until 2002. Really, Keagan is an Americanized respelling of this Irish classic surname and is therefore (we would argue) the less “Irish” version of the name. Keagan has really just been mirroring the success of Keegan for the past ten or so years, having already achieved its height of popularity in 2008. Today, the name is on the wane. Keagan’s overall success is owed to pretty constant interest in Irish-Gaelic names in America coupled by the growing trend using surnames as first names. If you’re into Irish names, we say go with the Keegan spelling. It’s more true to its roots.
