Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Kelsie

Kelsie is an Americanized respelling of Kelsey – a surname turned first name which was originally more popular for baby boys. As Kelsey became more common for girls in the United States, American parents adopted the cutesy “-ie” suffix and respelled the name to make it look even more youthful and girly. The English surname Kelsey ultimately originated from an ancient personal name Cēolsige created from the Olde English elements “cēol” (ship) and “sige” (victory). The first recorded spelling of the name, Keleseye, was from Lincolnshire in the 13th century; although the original masculine personal name dates back to pre 7th century England. There are towns in Lincolnshire named Kelsey to this day, located in northeastern England near the Scottish border. It is most likely that the personal name was given to a skillful shipman that sailed this coast off the North Sea or at least one who was involved in ship-building. Kelsey as a given name has been used for both males and females, so we’d consider it unisex although American parents of baby girls have hijacked the name and made it more female in the 21st century.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME KELSIE

Kelsie dates back to 1985 as a girl’s name in America – at least that’s the point in time when the name was used with enough frequency to land a spot on the Top 1000 list for the first time. The name shot up the charts pretty quickly and achieved levels of respectable moderation in terms of usage in the mid-1990s. No surprise, this was right around the time that Kelsey had become a Top 25 favorite in the United States. Kelsie was merely added as another spelling option for American parents. The Kute K name trend was also in full swing by the mid-1990s so Kelsey/Kelsie were natural additions to the list of Katelyns, Kaylas, Kaylees, Kinleys and Kylies. Unfortunately for Kelsey and Kelsie right now, both of these little ships are sinking as they trend backwards on the charts today. Especially Kelsie with an “ie” – she’s barely hanging on to the Top 1000 list at this point. There was a time when her mast was high, but she may be coming into harbor for good now.
