Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Kiley

Kiley is a spelling variant of Kylie. There are two possible origins of the name Kylie. The first suggests that Kylie is a modern invention, taken from the Celtic male name Kyle (from the Gaelic word “caol” meaning ‘slender’) and combining it with the female name Kelly (from “ceallach” meaning ‘hermit’ or ‘frequenter of churches’). The other possible origin of Kylie is connected to the indigenous Aboriginal people of Western Australia and a similar word in their native language for a ‘boomerang’. In any case, the name was popularized in Australia, but is now primarily used in the United States where, due to its popularity, respellings have occurred.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME KILEY

Kiley followed Kylie onto the American popularity charts in the same year – 1978 (although Kylie has always been the most popular spelling of this name). Kiley has done okay on the charts, advancing throughout the 1980s and 90s, but as we’ve entered the 21st century, she seems to be slipping in favor a bit. Really, though, with all of these “Kylie” names it just comes down to a matter of spelling preference (they‘re all pronounced the same way so it doesn’t matter that much). The Kiley spelling reminds us of Riley and Miley – two other cutesy names. These are all names for the non-traditional parents who prefer fleeting yet fashionable naming styles of more modern times. This little ‘boomerang’ may not return to the charts after its expired itself with overuse. We get that it’s a darling name, but it may not stand the test of time. We’ll have to wait and see.
