Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Kimber

Kimber is a modern name invention typically used as a truncated form of Kimberly. We know this because Kimber first appeared on the American female naming charts in 1988 when Kimberly was the 25th most popular girl’s name in the nation. Aside from Kimber’s usage as a shortened alternative to Kimberly, it has also been used as a semi-rare metronymic surname. In this case Kimber is derived from an Olde English female personal name “Cyneburh” composed of the Germanic Anglo-Saxon elements “cyne” meaning “royal” and “burh” meaning “fortress”. King Penda of Mercia – a 7th century Anglo-Saxon king in England – had a daughter named Cyneburh. Cyneburh of Mercia married the son of her father’s enemy, the King of Northumbria, and converted to Christianity whilst her father remained staunchly faithful to Anglo-Saxon paganism. She went on to found an abbey in Gloucester and was venerated as an English saint in the later Middle Ages (which is why baby girls were named after her). Although Kimber has strong Anglo-Saxon royal and saintly associations vis-à-vis Cyneburh, most people are unaware of this etymology. Kimber is more typically used as an abridged form of the ultra-popular girl’s name Kimberly (although Kimber could easily be considered gender-neutral).

Personality

OF THE GIRL NAME KIMBER

The number Four personality is marked by stability and discipline. This is the personality that follows the rules and is conservative by nature.  They have an earth-bound energy that prefers to build things methodically on top of firm foundations; they don't cut corners. Fours take their time and don't like to be hurried. But the outcome of their endeavors is likely to result in some strong and useful structure, which makes them great engineers and inventors. Fours are anything but frivolous or controversial. This is a trustworthy, straight-forward personality that embodies dedication and organization. They are the backbone and anchor in their relationships, careers and communities. They are tidy, punctual, and full of integrity. Hard-work comes naturally to a Four and they are immensely reliable. This is the personality you can always count on.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME KIMBER

Kimber debuted on the U.S. popularity charts in 1988 but only hung around for three years before retreating back into the shadows in 1991. The name reappeared on the charts more recently in 2010 but still resides near the bottom of the Top 1000 list. Perhaps it was fans of the FX television program “Nip/Tuck” (2003-2010) who were drawn to the beautiful (if slightly crazy) blonde character of Kimber Henry (portrayed by actress Kelly Carlson) who may have played some part in resurrecting this uncommon name. Kimber has a certain sweet and sexy quality to it, but it also manages to squeak out a little tom-boy at the same time.
