Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Kira

Kira is a variant of the Irish name Ciara (pronounced KEER-a), which is the feminine of Ciar meaning “black”. Secondly, Kira is also considered the Russian feminine form of Cyrus, from the Greek (kyrios) meaning ‘lord’ therefore giving Kira the meaning ‘mistress, ruler’. Thirdly, the name could be a feminine form of Kiram, from Sanskrit meaning ‘beam of light’. In Greek, the word “κυρία” (Kyria) translates to ‘lady’ providing another possible origin. Lastly, in Japanese, Kira means ‘glittery, shining’. Most likely, though, for English speakers the name mutated from the Irish Ciara, a name often given to dark-haired girls. It’s interesting, however, that many of the Eastern-based languages show word origins for Kira having to do with light, shining or brightness – which gives Kira an overall balancing east-west, bright-dark, yin-yang quality.
