Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Kody

Kody is an Americanized respelling of Cody (American parents have a modern tradition of swapping Cs for Ks). Cody is the transferred use of an anglicized Irish surname which originated from the Gaelic “Ó Cuidighthigh” from a nickname meaning “a helpful person”. Alternately, Cody may have developed from the Gaelic Mac Óda (“son of Otto”) from a Germanic name meaning “prosperity”. In the United States, the name Cody gained fame in the name of Buffalo Bill Cody (1846-1917), a Wild Wild West showman. As Cody gained popularity as a given name, Kody followed not too long after (in keeping with the American tendency to swap the “C” for a “K”). Outside of the United States, Kody is used with “so-so” frequency in Australia (another rugged, pioneering country).

OF THE BOY NAME KODY

Kody first appeared on the American male naming charts in 1978, right around the time that Cody was taking off in popularity. A very common trend among American parents is to take a popular “C” name and change it to a “K” name (just consider the Kardashians). Kody actually did remarkable well on his own, achieving peak popularity in 1993 at position #244 on the charts. Obviously not as successful as Cody (which was ranked #24 in 1993), but still not too bad for a respelled name. If you like the name Kody in reference to Buffalo Bill Cody then we say stick with the “C” spelling. Otherwise, Kody is just as kute.
