Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Kolten

Kolten is an Americanized respelling of Colton which started out as an English surname derived from a place name. The name Colton comes from the Olde English words “col” (meaning charcoal) and “tūn” (meaning town or settlement) to identify a person who dwelled in or near a town where coal was produced. The surname is also associated with a medieval nickname for a swarthy person (so called “Cola”). Swarthy generally described a dark, weather-beaten complexion, so it doesn’t have quite the same negative connotations we might think of today. Originating as a place name, Colton is a district east of Leeds first recorded in the Domesday Book in 1085. It was so named for the abundance of coal found in the area; either that, or for the farmer called “Cola” (swarthy guy) who owned much of the land. Once Colton became popularized as a given name in America around the 1980s, other variations of the name began to emerge. Kolten is another example of one such Americanized respelling of Colton.

OF THE BOY NAME KOLTEN

Due to the rising popularity of the boy’s name Colton in America starting in the early 1980s, other spelling variations began to emerge on the charts. Kolten showed up in 2008 and has so far shown growth in usage. Kolten is nowhere near as popular as Colton (currently a Top 100 favorite), but he is representative of the American parent’s penchant for spelling alterations. Kolten is one of those phonetic renderings of a more traditional name but looks a little clunky and, dare we say, swarthier. It doesn’t quite convey the same country-and-western feel one gets with Colton.
