Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Konner

Konner is an Americanized respelling of Connor (American parents are famous for turning C names into K names and they also have a knack for switching up vowels). There are two possible origins for the name Connor – one is Irish Gaelic and one is Anglo-Saxon. The Irish name Connor is derived from the old Gaelic name “Conchobhar” meaning “lover of hounds”. Animals were highly regarded among the ancient Celts – for instance the fish (particularly the salmon) represented knowledge. Birds were believed to hold prophetic knowledge. Horses, cattle and pigs symbolized fertility and prosperity. But the Celtic hound was a loyal companion and comrade in battle. They could be counted on for their endurance, speed and stamina during the hunt. In Celtic mythology hounds had magical licking powers to heal, and they also resided in the Otherworld as a guide and protector of lost souls. Conchobhar Mac Nessa was also the name of a legendary king of Ulster in Irish mythology (see literary references below). From a different etymological perspective, Conner could also be the transferred use of an Anglo-Saxon surname originating as an occupational name for an inspector of weights and measures. In Middle English, the word “cunnere” means “inspector” a derivative of “cun(nen)” meaning “to examine”. In any case, the Conor/Connor names are hugely popular throughout the English speaking world right now. Konnor and Konner followed as alternate spellings.

The spelling of Konner first appeared on the U.S. male naming charts in 2003 (not surprisingly, that year Connor was the 43rd most popular name in America). As we’ve already mentioned, American parents have a penchant for making up new spellings (it’s a bit tiresome, but ok). The spelling of Connor continues to be the most popular by far and is given to about 70% of the baby Connors being born. Conner (with an “e”) goes to about 20%. The remaining 10% is split among Conor, Konner and Konnor. So you can see that Konner all by himself is pretty rare. One thing we can say for certain: your little boy should get used to saying “My name is Konner. That’s Conor with a K, two Ns and an E.” He’ll be repeating that phrase for the rest of his life. Some might call that a nuisance.
