Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Kourtney

Kourtney with a K is just an Americanized repurposing of Courtney with a C (basically Kourtney is Courtney Kardashian style). Courtney is the transferred use of a surname, originating with the Norman French as a place name called Courtenay in Northern France, and introduced to the English after the Norman Conquest of 1066. The location-based origin of the name is said to mean “domain of Curtenus” from the Latin “curtus” meaning “broken”. It was largely an aristocratic baronial name taken from a Gallo-Roman landlord named Curtenus. Alternatively, it was believed that the surname originated from a nickname from the Old French “court, curt” meaning “short” along with “nes” meaning “nose” (identifying someone with a short nose). In England, the first recorded spelling appeared in the 12th century as de Curtenay. In the U.K. and U.S. the name is found mainly as a girl’s name and it is currently ranked highest in Northern Ireland and Scotland. Kourtney with a K, however, is so, um, like, totally American.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME KOURTNEY

Kourtney made her debut on the female Top 1000 list in 1981. The 1980s were right about the time that American parents started getting a little kitschy with their naming styles and “kreative” with their spellings. A lot of C names stated to morph into K names. Kourtney was basically riding this bandwagon. The name saw a fairly respectable amount of usage peaking in 1990 at position #402 on the charts. Then it was backwardsville for old Kourtney thereafter. The name actually dropped off the charts in 2005 as the disinterest in the name rose. However, just when we thought she was gone forever, Kourtney kame back again in 2009. Why? You must know the answer to this question. Actually the question should be, is there any area in modern American youth culture NOT being influenced by the Kardashians anymore? Honestly, it’s getting a little kreepy. But, hey, if you think that K kompliments your Kourtney with a little extra klass and kolor, you may want to rethink your position. These K names are becoming kommon and klichéd. Defintely a little kutsey if not a tad bit kontroversial. Then again, who kares what other people think. It doesn’t koncern them, right? You kan name your baby Kourtney whichever spelling you think is the kutest.
