Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Krystal

Krystal is a slight alteration of Crystal, an English vocabulary word used to signify high-quality cut glass suggestive of a precious gemstone. The English borrowed the word from the Greek “krystallos” which appropriately means “ice”. The crystal quartz is found high in the ice-cold Alps (Switzerland and France) and the ancient people believed them to be frozen ice which magically did not melt. The crystal is often a symbol of magical powers (think: the crystal ball) and is said to harness strong spiritual healing powers and represent the universal source of knowledge. A diamond is a type of crystal and both are considered the gemstone for April. Because crystals are transparent, they are also associated with ideals of clarity and purity. As a given name Crystal was coined for girls in the 19th century around the time other gemstone names became fashionable (Ruby, Amber, Pearl). In typical American fashion, the “C” was swapped for a “K” during the 1960s to create Krystal as an alternate spelling.

Personality

OF THE GIRL NAME KRYSTAL

The number Seven personality is deeply mystical and highly in tune with their spirituality. They operate on a different wavelength than the average joe. Spending time alone comes easily to Sevens, as it gives them time to contemplate philosophical, religious and spiritual ideas in an effort to find "real truth".  Sevens are wise, but often exude mystery as if they are tapped into something the rest of us don't understand. They love the outdoors and are fed by nature. Sevens are constantly seeking to understand human nature, our place in the universe, and the mystery of life in general. This makes them quite artistic and poetic, but they are also keen observers with high intellect - so they are equally scientific-minded. Sevens are charitable and care deeply about the human condition.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME KRYSTAL

Krystal appeared on the female naming charts for the first time in 1960 which is right around the time that Crystal was heading for a coveted Top 100 spot on the girl’s list. So Krystal was created as a new and “kreatively kute” way to re-render the name Crystal (consider what the Kardashians have done with Kourtney and Khloe). What’s remarkable is that Krystal managed to achieve Top 100 status on her own between 1982 and 1989 (at the same time Crystal was hitting the Top 10). Back in the 1980s Crystal (and so Krystal) owed much of her success to a TV character named Crystal Carrington, the wealth, beautiful and sweet wife of a business tycoon on the hit drama “Dynasty” (1981-1991). Since the 1990s onward the name Krystal has reversed her course and is now no longer a hip-and-happenin’ name as she once was in the 1980s. Whenever a name gets so tied to a pop-cultural reference that defines a decade (in this case “Dynasty” in the 1980s), names can get pretty outdated pretty fast. No one would argue that Crystal is a pretty name, and Krystal is a “kutsier” version of pretty, but to us the name is just sooo 1980s.
