Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Kyle

A kyle is the Scottish geographic term for a narrow straight (from the Gaelic word “caol” meaning ‘slender’). Kyle is also a Scottish surname which derives from a place name located in southwest Scotland called “Coel” (pronounced “coil”) originating from a Brythonic name rather than a Gaelic one (both tribes were Celts). This ties the name to the Celtic king, Old King Cole, from the memorable nursery rhyme: “Old King Cole was a merry old soul / And a merry old soul was he; / He called for his pipe, and he called for his bowl / And he called for his fiddlers three.” The surname dates back to the 15th century and was first recorded in 1428 at Glasgow, Scotland as “Kile.” It’s not clear when Kyle came into use as a first name but it was in use at the end of the 19th century in America. The name is currently most popular in Scotland (ranking in at position #16 in 2009), as well as Ireland, Canada and England.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME KYLE

In America the name Kyle was scarcely on the charts until the 1920’s. The name’s popularity grew slowly and quietly until it reached its apex in the late 1980’s throughout the 1990’s when it was generally a Top 25 pick for boys. Kyle has been in decline since the year 2000, having lost nearly 80 positions on the charts; this means that the name is losing its trendiness, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. While we consider Kyle a boy’s name, it has shown up on the charts for girls sporadically between 1950 and 1990, but it never took hold and eventually fell into obscurity. Kyle has old Scottish roots but feels more like a modern classic. It’s a soft, smooth name for parents that like the strong “K” sound, but don’t necessarily want an overly masculine name.

Literary Characters

OF THE BABY NAME KYLE

Selina Kyle is the alter-ego of the fictional Catwoman, a major character in the DC Comics’ Batman series, created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger in 1940. Undergoing many incarnations in the seventy-plus years since then, Selina morphed from a relatively harmless femme fatale cum burglar into a modern day dominatrix, via her many vehicles of comics, television, movies and video games. Everyman’s fantasy of the gorgeous female with more than a whiff of dangerous edge to her, she personifies the scary allure of the empowered feminine. Initially seen as a complementary sexy companion/ adversary to Bruce Wayne/Batman, Selina/Catwoman has taken on a full back story of her own, often contradictory, but always interesting. Alternately presented as a poor orphan or the abused child of an alcoholic, Selina never fails to rise to the occasion and make the most of her circumstances and particular talents. She has been a burglar, a thief, a murderess; she has also been a rescuer, a loving mother and a kind of Lady Bountiful to the less fortunate. Perched somewhere between the innocent Robin and the evil Joker, Selina walks a fine line on a narrow street of her own moral making, calling the shots as she sees them, and executing her decisions with deadly weapons as often as with feminine wiles. Perhaps Selina’s most enchanting characteristic is that she cannot be pinned down to a simple definition of black or white – Selina is at least fifty shades of gray!
