Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Kyler

The name Kyler is mainly an American invention. It most likely originated through the combination of the names Kyle and Tyler (it is also reminiscent of the name Skyler). The name also is often associated with the Americanized Dutch surname “Cuyler” which is a variant of “Kuilart” and originated as an occupational name in the Netherlands (Holland) to signify a potato grower. The Dutch word “kuil” means ‘pit, hole’ and “kuilen” means ‘to plant potatoes’ since potatoes are a root vegetable that grow underground in pits or holes. Kyler is really a modern invention, however, and seemingly distinct to the United States.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME KYLER

The male name Kyler debuted on the U.S. popularity charts for boys in 1986. This is right around the time that the names Tyler and Kyle were becoming ϋber-trendy and shortly after Skyler came on the scene. Clearly, these names influenced the invention of Kyler. Since its first appearance over 25 years ago, Kyler has seen mainly an upward trend on the charts, although it may be leveling off at fair to moderate usage. It’s a “cutesy” name and not particularly masculine. The name is likely to get confused with Tyler and Skyler as the child grows up, but if this doesn’t bother you – hopefully it won’t bother him either. Some people believe that Kyler is of Irish Gaelic origin but this is simply not the case. If you like Gaelic or Irish names, and prefer the “K” sound, we say go with Kyle, Kevin or Keegan. Kyler is really an American name.
