Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Kyron

Kyron is most likely an Americanized corruption of the name Chiron borne from Greek mythology as the wisest and most civilized of all the centaurs (half-man, half-horse). Ultimately derived from the Greek Cheiron or Kheiron (Χείρων) the name means “hand” as in “skilled with the hands” - probably because Chiron had the hands of a man but the feet (hoofs) of a horse. In Greek mythology, centaurs were generally depicted as savage, pleasure-seeking men/beasts that kidnapped women, overindulged in wine, and often instigated violence when intoxicated. Chiron, however, was different. Having received early instruction from Apollo and Artemis, Chiron was schooled in the arts of hunting, music, dance, medicine and prophesies which is why he stood apart from the other centaurs. In Greek tradition many of the esteemed heroes were pupils of Chiron: Ajax, Achilles, Theseus, Jason and Heracles (Hercules) to name a few. Although centaurs were immortal, Heracles negotiated with Zeus to give Chiron’s life in exchange for the release of Prometheus. Chiron was ultimately killed when he dropped an arrow soaked in serpent’s blood on to his own hoof. Thereafter Chiron ascended to the sky and was henceforth honored by the Greeks as the constellation Centaurus (one of the largest and brightest constellations in the southern sky). Kyron is a newly invented name which may have been inspired by this Greek mythological creature. Either that or it was merely created off similar sounding names such as Byron. Kyron is not a widely used name in any Western nation. At least not yet.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME KYRON

Kyron has an interesting history on the American male naming charts. It only first appeared on the Top 1000 list in 2010, but that’s not the interesting part. What’s interesting is the event which actually inspired the sudden usage of Kyron in the United States. It has to do with a news story. On June 4, 2010 a little boy by the name of Kyron Horton went missing in Portland, Oregon. The media attention that this tragic story received ensured the name Kyron was in every American household for weeks and months thereafter (and Kyron still remains missing to this day). So this is how the name Kyron got noticed in America, and 2010 marks the first year the name showed up on the boy’s charts. Kind of a sad beginning, but the name still remains on the charts today (although with low usage). We like the name’s connection to the kind, intelligent centaur – and we also like Kyron for a baby boy born under the sun sign Sagitarrius. Why? The enlightened Chiron of Greek mythology is often used as a symbol of the Sag.
