Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Lacey

Lacey is the transferred use of a baronial surname with Norman-French origins from a place name, the town of Lassy in northwestern France (named after a Gaulish personal name “Lascius”). Lascius appears to have Latin roots and may be a derivative of “lascivus” which means ‘playful, frolicsome, kittenish’. The name was fairly restricted to English nobility and was also a powerful family name in medieval Ireland. The name first appeared in the Domesday Book, recorded as “de Laci” in 1086. As a female forename, Lacey has only been in use since the latter half of the 20th century. The name is spelled Lacey, Lacy or Laci – although it is most commonly spelled Lacey. Today, this female given name is most popular in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Lacey made her debut on the American female popularity charts in 1975 and very quickly ascended the charts. The name has never managed to carve a spot on the Top 100, but she came awfully close in 1984 at position #116. The 1980s were the best decade for this “playful” name, but in the last 20+ years Lacey has lost her luster. This name reminds us of Stacey, Casey and Macey. It’s got a cute, girlish sound with a modern sensibility. Especially with the connection to “lace”, the name is elegant and delicate with a frilly femininity. It’s cute, soft and sweet if maybe a little on the prissy side but that gives her some added charm. Like the name’s etymology suggests, Lacey has a cheerful quality. There’s no two ways about it – Lacey is all girl.

Literary Characters

OF THE BABY NAME LACEY

Beatrice Lacey is the central character in Philippa Gregory’s 1987 historical novel, “Wideacre”, her debut novel and the first in the Wideacre Trilogy. Beatrice is the daughter and favored pet of the Squire of Wideacre, in whom he instills a love for the land. Alas, he does a fine job of this, for it is her love of Wideacre that drives every aspect of Beatrice’s life, with dire consequences. Beatrice, much like her literary sister, Scarlett O’Hara, will do anything to save her land, and that includes deception, seduction, incest and murder – she means business! She is no paragon of virtue, but she is certainly never dull. As well as being responsible for her father’s death, maiming her fiancé, sleeping with her brother, deceiving her sister-in-law, marrying without love, and arranging her mother’s death, our fine young heroine also manages to bring two children into the world who she intends to inherit the entailed estate. Despite herself, Beatrice, although never achieving her ultimate goals, manages to find redemption at the hands of her spurned lover, who murders her, but probably sends her chastened soul to everlasting salvation. This was a Beatrice you wanted to be on the right side of!
