Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Lane

Lane is the transferred use of an English surname with English, French and Irish roots. There are three possible etymological sources for this name. One, and the most obvious, is that Lane was derived from a topographical name which indicated a person dwelling in or around a narrow passageway between hedges or banks (from the Olde English “lanu” meaning ‘path, lane’). Secondly, the name could be derived from the French word “laine” meaning ‘wool’ –a surname with occupational origins to signify a person who worked in wool. Finally, Lane could come from the Irish-Gaelic “O’Luain” meaning ‘descendent of the warrior’. The first recorded spelling of the surname Lane came in the 12th century. The first name Lane is primarily considered male but it has been occasionally used for females.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME LANE

Lane made a brief appearance on the U.S. popularity charts at the end of the 19th century but pretty much disappeared until the 1930s. Over the past several decades and now as we enter the 21st century, we can see that the name Lane has reached a position of moderate usage in the United States. It’s a sweet and simple choice – another example of a snappy, one-syllable name. This name is neither particularly masculine nor feminine so it seems to work on either gender. However, it is far more popular for boys and therefore considered more of a male name. As a parent, there is something you should consider when selecting this name: it’s ripe for schoolyard bullying, such as “Lame Lane” or “Insane Lane”. This is a name that eventually grows on you, but there’s something about it that lacks pizzazz and substantial interest, although it does have a certain “preppy” quality. Lane. It’s almost too simplistic – but perhaps therein lies its appeal.

Literary Characters

OF THE BABY NAME LANE

Lane is the collegiate boyfriend of Franny in J.D. Salinger’s 1961 novella “Franny and Zooey”. His character juxtaposes her own existential crisis – he is the epitome of the vapid Ivy League student – name-dropping, bragging, intellectual phony who is completely clueless over the enormity of Franny’s spiritual crisis and is more concerned about eating his escargot and frog-legs, making the Yale-Princeton football game on time, and being seen in public with the beautiful Franny. The book deals with Salinger’s themes concerning eastern philosophies and finding enlightenment. Franny’s relationship with Lane serves to cast a spotlight on the emptiness of everyday, upper-crust existence.
