Lexie

Lexie is a diminutive of Alexandra which is the feminine form of Alexander. Alexander in turn is an ancient Greek name, Alexandros (Αλεξανδρος), composed of the elements “alexein” meaning “to defend” and “andros” which translates to “man, warrior” in a relationship or possessive form; hence the name’s full meaning “defender of mankind”. Alexander’s most notable namesake was Alexander the Great, a 4th century B.C. King of the Greek city-state Macedon. Arguably the greatest military general of all time, Alexander spent 12 years expanding his empire east to the Himalayas, defeating the entirety of the Persian Empire and spreading a new Hellenistic culture in the present day Middle East and parts of Asia. Alexander the Great never lost a battle, but his life was cut short at the young age of 33. Indeed, you’d be hard pressed to find a warrior more legendary than this man; even the ancient Romans jealously revered him. Military generals to this day still consider Alexander the Great one of their greatest inspirations. One of the oldest names in circulation (dating back at least 2,400 years!), Alexander has had ample time to spawn scores of linguistic variations, female forms and nicknames. Alexandra is the most commonly used female variant, and she, too, has generated other versions of herself: Alexandria, Alejandra, Alessandra, Sandra, Sasha, Alexa, Alexis and Lexie are just some such examples. Several of Alexandra’s diminutives have achieved independence as given names in their own right (rather than just being used colloquially). Lexie is currently a Top 100 favorite in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales (as is Lexi without the “e”).
