Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Lilianna

Lilianna is an embellished Latinate form of Lillian. Almost all languages that use the Latin form spell this name Liliana (one “n” as opposed to two). Lillian is an English name dating back to the 16th century; it began as a pet form or nursery name for Elizabeth. Lillian is often thought to be a longer derivation of the name Lily, but this is probably erroneous as Lily wasn’t in use as a given name until the 19th century –almost three centuries after Lillian. Since Lillian is believed to be derived from Elizabeth, then the name’s meaning is “God is my oath” (see Elizabeth for more detail). Of course, as a relatively modern coinage, Lilianna could also be the combination of Lily + Anna. It all depends on the perspective of the parents. Today most parents are opting for these flowery Latinate four-syllable names because they’re ultra-feminine and extravagant. The name’s meaning is probably secondary.
