Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Lola

The name Lola originated as a nursery name for the Spanish Dolores. “Dolores” translates to ‘sorrow’ in Spanish as in the title for the Virgin Mary: Maria de los Dolores, or Our Lady of Sorrows. Lola developed from Dolores as a pet form, and Lolita is considered another diminutive of Lola. Lola eventually increased in usage as an individually given name in the English-speaking countries. In the early 19th century, an Irish woman, Spanish dancer and courtesan by the name of Eliza Gilbert (who used the stage name Lola Montez) rose to infamy when she became the mistress of the King of Bavaria (Ludwig I) and was made a countess. Enraptured with this beauty, the king also gave her significant political power which would be his downfall. She outraged the aristocracy and conservatives giving rise to a revolutionary movement which would contribute to the king’s fall from grace and subsequent abdication. After fleeing Bavaria, Lola Montez eventually made her way to New York in 1851 where she did rescue work with prostitutes. A lot of Lola’s spread and popularity as a name is owed to this spunky woman from the early 19th century.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME LOLA

The name Lola was almost a Top 100 favorite back when the U.S. government began tracking naming trends in 1880. The name’s popularity persisted until the 1940s when her backwards momentum on the charts became more significant. The name declined in usage consistently until the 1980s when she fell off the naming charts altogether. Her hiatus from the charts would last for about 25 years until the early 2000s. A couple of celebrities named their daughters Lola which helped to revive the name. Between 2002 and 2006, the name Lola came roaring back into the American psyche, advancing over 700 positions on the charts in those five years alone. Famous people who found this darling name appealing and bestowed it upon their daughters are Kelly Ripa, Chris Rock, Jennie Garth, Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen. BAM! This was a name suddenly in celebrity news at the turn of the 21st century and, as a result, American parents across the nation responded in droves. The name continues its upward ascent to this day, albeit a little more slowly. It’s not quite a Top 200 favorite yet, but it’s getting close to that achievement. Like Lily, Lucy, Lila, and Lexi – Lola is a pretty, four-letter, two-syllable feminine “L” name. We think it’s just darling, but it also has a seductress quality (like the aforementioned Lola Montez). And don’t forget about Lola Lola, the femme fatale of the 1930 film The Blue Angel, famously portrayed by Marlene Dietrich. Lola is indeed an adorable, bright and friendly name. Full of sorrow? We don’t think so. Lola enjoys life with pluck and gusto – and she has that impish quality we just can’t get enough of.
