Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Love

Love is a Virtue name from the Olde English verb “lufian” (to cherish, delight in, love) and noun “lufu” (affection, love), both derived from the Proto-Indo-European root *leubh- meaning “to love, care for” (Pok. 683-684). As a masculine given name coined by the Puritans in the early 17th century, Love is essentially equivalent to the female Virtue name Charity (borrowed from the Greek agape meaning “love”). Charity was developed as a concept more in line with Christian ideology so as not to confuse it with amorous love between men and women. Love and Charity both suggest the love of fellow man, but also man’s absolute love for God and Him for man. Love conquers all and absolves us of our sins, right? We think that’s the point that religious zealots William and Mary Brewster were trying to make when they named their second-born son Love Brewster. Love was nine-years-old when he accompanied his parents on the maiden Mayflower voyage to the New World in 1620. Therefore, Love was one of the very first American names. Share the Love. Pretty cool.

OF THE BOY NAME LOVE

Only eight baby boys were called Love in 2012 vs. 111 baby girls. So you can see that Love has switched into female territory. Nevertheless, the name is not given to either gender with enough frequency to land a position on America’s Top 1000 list (although it was on the boy’s list more than 100 years ago). Love is really an old-fashioned Puritan masculine name. Charity was his female equivalent.
