Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Luigi

Luigi is the Italian form of the French Louis or the English Lewis, all of which are derived from an ancient Frankish/Germanic origin masculine name, Ludwig, from the Germanic elements “hlōd” (fame) and “wīg” (war). The French Louis (pronounced loo-EE) became a common name within royal households and families of nobility, auspiciously dating all the way back to the 8th century, starting with Louis I, the son of Charlemagne (King of the Franks and Holy Roman Empire). Fifteen more Kings of France named Louis would follow him, ending with Louis XVI who was executed during the French Revolution (1793). Louis XVI’s great great great grandfather was Louis XIV whose reign lasted 72 years and coincided with the height of French power and prosperity. The French obviously helped popularize this royally “famous” name in England where it has often been rendered as “Lewis”. There are several language variations of Louis including Aloysius (Provençal), Ludwig (German), Luigi (Italian), Luis (Spanish), Ludvig (Scandinavian), and Lewis or Louis (English). Pet or short forms of the name are Lou and Louie. All of these name continue to be hugely popular in their respective languages, however, we aren’t quite sure how Luigi fairs in Italy anymore.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME LUIGI

Luigi has barely seen blips of usage in the United States. This is a name that has only appeared on the American male naming charts four times: 1913, 1967, 1969 and 1970. Those are the only years when Luigi managed to achieve a position on the Top 1000 list (and even still, he saw extremely low usage). In other words, Luigi, Ludwig and Aloysius are not generally used by Americans parents when naming their baby boys (they are more likely to choose from Louis, Luis or Lewis). Still, Luigi has some serious ethnic flavor. Like Guido or Geppetto, Luigi is one of those names that’s all Italian. And we’re talking seriously tasty spaghetti and meatballs Italian. We just can’t help but picture a rambunctiously delightful little bambino, or a lively, crotchety vecchio.
