Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Lynn

Lynn comes from the Celtic-Welsh word for “lake” (llyn). Other Celtic words describing a body of water (i.e., a lake) include “linn” (Irish), “lenn” (Breton), “loch” (Scottish) and “logh” (Manx). Many place names in the ancient Celtic World include the “lake” element in their names (such as Dublin “black lake”; the Llŷn Peninsula in Wales; or the English seaport town of King's Lynn). In terms of a name, Lynn first developed as a surname which eventually morphed into a masculine personal name and finally, in the 20th century, became distinctly female. The surname derived from various place names in England so-called Lynn, named because the area featured a lake or a pond. When surnames came into circulation in England during the Middle Ages (as a means of identification for the purposes of taxation), they were generally derived from one of five sources: location names, topographical features, names passed from the father, occupations and nicknames – in this case, Lynn developed as a surname from a place name. Such surnames were generally given to men who hailed from a specific town but later relocated elsewhere (the name of his birthplace would have served to identify him). The first recorded evidence of this particular surname appeared in the late 12th century and was rendered as “de Lenna”. Aside from Lynn’s history as an English surname, it is also an Irish last name, a shortened version of O’Flynn. O’Flynn is a clan name meaning “descended from Flann” (Flann being a nickname for a person with a ruddy complexion). Although Lynn has a history of being used as a forename for boys, it’s pretty much considered exclusively female now. As such, it is often connected to “Linda” (Spanish for “beautiful”) or any female name ending with the “-lynn” suffix. Although Lynn was extremely popular in the mid-20th century, it has fallen off the radar in most English speaking nations. It is, however, ranked very high in the Netherlands (currently the 11th most popular female name).

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME LYNN

Lynn has had an interesting ride on the American popularity charts. Although the name successfully dates back to the 19th century on the boy’s chart, it didn’t really come into circulation for girls until the 20th century. However, the name soared in popularity for girls during the 1930s and by 1946 she landed a spot on America’s Top 100 list. Mostly popular during the 1950s and 60s, Lynn got as high as #58 on the charts in 1956. Her popularity was likely influenced by Linda – another mid-century favorite. Not surprisingly, as Lynn hit the top of the female charts, the name lost its attraction as a masculine name. Lynn is no longer popular for either gender today. For baby girl’s Lynn fell off the Top 100 list in 1969 and then off the Top 1000 list in 1997. For boys, Lynn fell off the Top 1000 list in 1986. Case in point: only 90 baby girls were given the name Lynn in 2012 and 26 baby boys. Like Linda, Lynn is largely considered outdated by today’s naming standards. We like this name for girls, though, for several reasons. It has a lovely, gentle one syllable sound and the “lake” etymology is a great one for water-loving parents (or babies born under an astrological water sign). It’s a beautiful name in a straightforward kind of way. This is a name that doesn’t have to try so hard like Brooklynn, Adalynn, Ashlynn, Raelynn, etc. Lynn is a minimalist name; she’s pretty without all the fuss. Lynn is also a very common middle name.
