Madden

Madden is the transferred use of an Irish surname derived from an ancient nickname. The Ó Madain clan got their name from the Gaelic “Madain” which means “son of the hound” or “little dog”. Animals were highly regarded among the ancient Celts as they were ascribed certain symbolic significance to the clansmen. For instance, fish (particularly the salmon) represented knowledge. Birds were believed to hold prophetic knowledge. Horses, cattle and pigs symbolized fertility and prosperity. But the Celtic hound was a loyal companion and comrade in battle. They could be counted on for their endurance, speed and stamina during the hunt. In Celtic mythology hounds had magical licking powers to heal, and they also resided in the Otherworld as a guide and protector of lost souls. So we can safely assume that a name like “Madain” was worn with honor. The first recorded spelling of Madden came in the form of O'Madadhain and, as a formal surname, dates back to the early 12th century. The origins of the O'Madain clan can be found in Country Galway along the banks of the River Shannon. Several families holding the Madden surname are still found in this part of Ireland.
