Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Mariano

Mariano is an Italian, Portuguese and Spanish masculine name with one of two etymologies. On the one hand, Mariano comes from Marianus which was an ancient Latin family name derived from Mars, the Roman god of war. In this case, the name comes from the Latin “maris” meaning “male, manly”. The name Marinus was borne by two notable early saints who served to popularize the name in later centuries. Marinus of Caesarea was a 3rd century Roman soldier who refused to renounce his Christian faith in exchange for a military promotion (thus he was executed by the pagan government). The other, Saint Marinus the Monk, was the eponymous founder of San Marino (c. 301 A.D.), a tiny republic and microstate on the Italian Peninsula. San Marino was built up around the monastery Marinus founded in his efforts to free himself of the Emperor and Papal controls. Aside from Mariano’s connection to the Roman god of war, the name is also considered a masculine name equivalent to Mariana (Maria plus Ana) in honor of the Blessed Mother Mary and her mother (Jesus’ grandmother) Saint Anne.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME MARIANO

Mariano is a name that’s been used in the United States since the early 1900s. Although over the course of the past 100+ years this name has consistently been inconsistent in terms of usage. Always residing at or near the bottom of the charts, and often dropping off the charts altogether, Mariano has always been a rarely used name in America. This is perplexing. Mariano is loaded with romance and poetry plus manliness and warmth. It’s four syllables and highly reflective of the Romance language from whence it came. We like the dual connection to Mars (the Roman god of war) and Maria/Ana, two pious women from Catholic tradition. It gives this name a nice yin-yang quality.
