Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Maude

Maude (Maud) developed as the medieval Anglo-Saxon form of Matilda, which itself is the Latinized form of an Old German female personal name Mahthildis (Olde English: Mæðhilde). Mahthildis is comprised of the Germanic elements “maht” meaning “might” and “hild” meaning “battle”. Therefore, the name essentially means “mighty battler” or “strength in battle”. Saint Matilda was the 10th century wife of Henry the Fowler, King of the Germans, noted for her devotion to prayer and generous almsgiving. The name was made popular in her honor mainly around the regions of Saxony and Bavaria. The Norman-French would introduce Mahthildis to the English following the Norman Conquest of 1066. In fact, William the Conqueror’s own wife was called Matilda of Flanders. After William’s conquest of England he became King of England and Matilda was his Queen Consort. Queen Matilda was also a baby-making machine, delivering nine children to William, including two future kings of England (William II and Henry I). The English adopted the name as Mæðhilde in their own language but were more apt to use the colloquial form of Maud (which is what they called their queen). Maud fell out of favor by the 15th century but was later revived in the 19th century, possibly influenced by Alfred Lord Tennyson’s 1855 poem “Maud”. Today Maud is most commonly used among the Dutch in the Netherlands, but it also appears on the naming charts of France. Modern English-speakers are more inclined to spell it with an “e” (Maude), but neither spelling is used with much regularity now.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME MAUDE

The name Maude was most popular in America during the latter half of the 19th century when it was often a Top 25 favorite. As we turned into the 20th century, Maude was still going strong at position #77 on the charts (1900). The name would eventually fall off America’s Top 100 list in 1906 and never recover her popularity. In fact, the name fell out of fashion pretty fast and would disappear completely from the Top 1000 list in 1951. It’s been over 60 years since old Maude has found herself in circulation. Even the classic cult-favorite film “Harold and Maude” (1971) and the award winning sitcom “Maude” (1972-1978) did nothing to encourage a revival of the name. To put it in perspective, less than 10 baby girls were given the name Maude in 2012. Still, this is a name we give high-marks to for originality, history and medieval charm.

Literary Characters

OF THE BABY NAME MAUDE

Harold is the wealthy but parentally neglected young hero of the 1971 cultish dark comedy, Harold and Maude, based upon a screenplay by Colin Higgins and also published as a novel that same year. Harold (played by Bud Cort) is a twenty-something boy with an abiding obsession with death, who meets and forms a relationship with a 79-year old woman, Maude Chardin (played by the inimitable Ruth Gordon), who has a fondness for funerals. In his deadpan approach to life (actually, death), Harold is hilarious, as he stages highly stylized series of suicide attempts for his mother’s benefit. Her attempts to find suitable young women for him are thwarted by his insistence on reenacting his suicidal pranks for them. He transforms his Jaguar into a hearse and attends the funerals of strangers. Enter Maude – a Holocaust survivor, a lover of life and a woman with a fine and firm sense of the value of life. She – as fanciful as it may seem – teaches him that very lesson not only by her life but by her death. After having been exposed to Maude’s joie-de- vivre, Harold is ready to face life realistically, yet equipped with a grateful song in his heart.
