Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Miah

This is a tricky one. Miah appears to be a modern coinage first appearing in Australia during the 1990s. Appropriately, the name purportedly comes from an Aboriginal word meaning “moon”. We have not been able to verify this assertion; however, mainly because there are hundreds of Aboriginal cultures across Australia (each with their own language and/or dialects). Not to mention many of these languages are now extinct. Here are some of the actual words we found to mean “moon” in a few Aboriginal languages: kunyul (Nyulnyulan); wīta (Tasmanian); gakgalak (Wagiman); t̯apařa (Tiwi) and partangarra (Warlpiri). Do any of these words even remotely appear linked to Miah? We don’t think so. Furthermore, in ancient Aboriginal astronomy, the moon was widely personified as a MALE figure, not female. We believe the notion that Miah means “moon” in “Aboriginal” is nothing more than folk etymology (unless someone can prove us wrong). Rather, it is our opinion that Miah is a made-up spelling, either another version of Maia (Greek), Miya (Japanese) or Mia (Latin); and is therefore either pronounced MY-ah or ME-ah depending on the preference. Please refer to these other name pages for more detailed information. It should also be mentioned that Miah has historically been used as a nickname for Jeremiah.
