Literary Characters

OF THE BABY NAME MORRIS

Quincey P. Morris is a leading character in Bram Stoker’s 1897 horror novel, Dracula, which has been adapted a thousand times over into movies and other media. Quincey is a good and decent Texan with a taste for travel and adventure – and does he get it! He falls in love with Lucy Westrena, but she is already engaged to his friend, Arthur Holmwood, and offers him her friendship instead. Sometime later, after Lucy has been bitten by Dracula, Holmwood calls for Quincey’s help. Quincey donates blood, unsuccessfully, to the dying Lucy. It is Quincey who, through the experiences of his extensive travels, offers the theory of vampirism. And it is Quincey who joins the others in the horrendous task of killing the now turned vampire, Lucy, although he must step outside at the last awful minute. Quincey and his associates then search in earnest for the vile Dracula, tracking him back to his castle in Transylvania, and having no trouble finishing the deed in this instance. Alas, Quincey is mortally wounded in the battle, and dies shortly thereafter. Quincey P. Morris achieves an immortality of sorts, as Jonathan Harker and his wife name their firstborn son after him.
