Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Myla

Myla is a modern invention most believe to be a feminine rendition of the masculine Myles which has its roots in the Norman French. The origin of the name Myles is uncertain. It could be a diminutive of Michael or come from the Latin word “miles” meaning “soldier”. Myla could also possibly be connected to the Slavic element “mil” (as in Mila) which means ‘grace, favor’ (a name brought to England by way of the Vikings). Myla could also be an elaboration of Mya (a modern form of Mia which is a diminutive of Maria) or else a slight alteration of Myra (which was a name invented by a 17th century poet). Myra is believed to be either an anagram of Mary or a twist on the word “myrrh” (one of the gifts brought to Jesus in the manger). One thing we can say for sure: Myla is a name with uncertain origins and most likely a simple invention by putting two appealing sounds together: my+la.
