Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Nataly

Nataly comes from the Latin name Natalia, which means "Christmas Day.” The Latin word “natalis” translates to ‘birthday’ (and in particular, Christ’s birthday, or Christmas day: “natale domini”). Like Natalee, the respelling of Nataly appears to be a modern American invention. This lovely name has Latin roots, but it has been widely adopted within the Western world and particularly in East Europe. Natalya and Natasha are the Russian versions; Nathalie and Natalie are used among the French and Germans. The Italians and Spanish typically use Natalia. Natalie is the most common North American spelling of this Christmas baby, but Americans are also prone to use Nataly and Natalee to differentiate their daughters with more “unique” spellings. Historically, the “Natalie” names were common among babies born on or near Christmas Day. A fourth century saint Adrian of Nicomedia and his wife Natalia are mainly recognized by the Eastern Orthodox Church which is why the Natalia name is more common among Eastern Christians (Russians, Czechs, Hungarians, Croatians, etc). Nataly is more of a made-up spelling distinct to the United States.
