Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Oona

Oona and Oonagh are variant spellings of the Irish Úna, derived from the Gaelic “uan” meaning “lamb”. The name is also used among the Finnish people, but pronounced AW-na. The most famous name bearer is Oona O’Neill Chaplin (1925-1991), the daughter of Nobel Prize winning playwright Eugene O’Neill and the fourth and last wife of comic genius Charlie Chaplin. When Oona and Chaplin wed in 1943, she was 18 and he was 54. This obviously garnered a lot of media attention, but the pair stayed married up until Chaplin’s death and together they produced eight children.
