Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Paityn

Paityn is an Americanized respelling of the English surname Peyton/Payton. Both Payton and Peyton have become successful gender-neutral names in the United States so the fanciful Paityn was coined in order to designate it more female specific. The surname Payton is derived from a location name in England which in turn was most likely derived from an Olde English personal name. The land in question was known as “Pǽga’s settlement” which would have signified the outlying country or a “rustic” area. The surname was first recorded as Pachenhou in the Domesday Book in the early 12th century. At this point in England’s history, dialects varied greatly and few people were literate so names mutated drastically based upon early “sounds like.” The last names in the forms of Payton and Peyton were around by the 13th and 14th centuries, respectively. Despite their long “rustic” history as surnames, Payton and Peyton did not turn into forenames until the late the 20th century. And the feminized form of Paityn didn’t appear until this new 21st century.

Paityn is a name with a very specific audience – parents who like trendy names but prefer to put their own unique spelling stamp on them. It’s a very “American” naming style.
