Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Payton

Payton is an alternate spelling of the more popular Peyton, both of which are used mainly in the United States as a given name to both males and females. Both names are derived from an English surname which originated as a location name that probably came from on Old English given name. In medieval England, the land was probably known as “Pǽga’s settlement” which would indicate the outlying country or a rustic area. It is first recorded as Pachenhou in the Domesday Book in the early 12th century. At this point in England’s history, dialects were very pronounced and few could spell, so names mutated drastically based upon “sounds like.” The last names in the forms of Payton and Peyton were around by the 13th and 14th centuries, respectively. Payton gained popularity in the United States only very recently.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME PAYTON

Payton is a spelling variation that came in use after the more popular form of the name, Peyton. The name is unisex and currently used for both genders, although it’s quite a bit more popular for girls than for boys; more so than Peyton. Payton is one of those names whose popularity was so fast and furious, that American parents started to develop spelling variations as a way of differentiating their child from the pack. First there was Peyton, then came Payton, and finally followed by Payten and Paityn. This sort of trendiness has a history of backfiring on the name’s initial appeal.
