Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Peggy

The name Peggy developed in England during the Middle Ages. Essentially, it’s a diminutive of Margaret, which originated from the Hebrew “margaron” meaning “pearl” (as a diminutive, Peggy means “little pearl”). It was the Norman French who brought the name Marguerite to England after the Norman Conquest of 1066; Marguerite was eventually transformed into Margaret in the English language. Meg and Meggie were used as diminutives or pet forms starting in the Middle Ages, and soon enough those names morphed into Peg and Peggy. It’s not entirely certain how the M changed into a P, but given the high rate of illiteracy and the great diversity of dialects present in medieval England, it’s not a total stretch of the imagination. Similarly, Polly spun from Molly (a diminutive of Mary) in much the same way. Margaret is one of those given names which has produced a whole host of various (and seemingly disparate) nicknames and pet forms overtime, even Daisy can be considered derived from Marguerite. There’s Madge, Marge, Mamie, Margot, Meg, Mae, Maggie and, in this instance, Peggy. But why was Margaret such a common name across medieval Europe? That credit can go to a popular 4th century saint, Margaret of Antioch (who also happens to be the patron saint of expectant mothers). You see, life was precarious in the Middle Ages, so naming children after pious saints was used as a protective measure. And St. Margaret was a much beloved saint (for more information on St. Margaret of Antioch, see historical references below). Generally speaking, Peggy is more typically considered a pet form of Margaret rather than an independently given first name. Although Peggy does have a history of usage as a stand-alone name in her own right.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME PEGGY

Although Peggy is no longer in circulation as a baby girl’s name of choice (or at least not enough to make the Top 1000 list of names), there was a point in time when she was a hot commodity. Peggy’s heyday came during the 1930s, 40s and 50s and, while she never surpassed the success of Margaret as a given name, she was mostly a Top 50 favorite for three decades. Today Peggy is too associated with other popular mid-century names of yesteryear. She is now considered outdated with the likes of Linda, Barbara and Nancy. This name is also closely associated with a highly popular song by Buddy Holly released in 1957 called “Peggy Sue” and covered by scores of musicians later. Although Peggy quickly dropped from fashionable use during the 1970s and 80s (her last appearance on America’s Top 1000 list was in 1989), she remains a quaintly charming nickname for Margaret – and one which has been around for almost 1000 years. There’s something to be said for that!

Literary Characters

OF THE BABY NAME PEGGY

Peggy is a character in Richard Wright’s classic 1940 novel of racism in America, Native Son. Peggy is the white (Irish) maid in the household where the protagonist, Bigger Thomas, goes to work as a chauffeur. There is nothing overtly racist about her; she is nothing but polite to Bigger. Yet she serves as a powerful symbol of all that seems to have been inbred in white American culture. Peggy is a paid worker in the house, as is Bigger, nonetheless, she subconsciously assumes a superior attitude to him, speaking to him “kindly” of “your people” and professing an interest in his welfare. She clearly considers herself to be firmly in the camp of the righteous and, sadly, Bigger would agree with her wholeheartedly. Peggy is the Daltons’ bustling Irish housekeeper. She clearly believes part of her job is to instruct Bigger and remind him to fulfill his duties. She believes the Daltons have been great benefactors for blacks in the U.S. She also thinks that she can completely understand blacks in America because the Irish have suffered from prejudice in the past as well.

Peggy O’Dowd is a character in William Makepeace Thackeray’s 1847/48 classic, Vanity Fair. Peggy is the wife of the major of the regiment under whom Becky’s and Amelia’s husbands serve. She initially provides some rather broad comic relief in the novel, being as Irish as Paddy’s pig, as the old saying goes. Mr. Thackeray endows her with a thick brogue that makes everything she says funny. In her eyes, if it isn’t from Ireland, it - no matter what it is – is worthless. Yet, when the action begins and the army is called to battle, Peggy O’Dowd shows her true colors. She is a devoted wife; she bravely sends her man off in fine style, showing up the girlish selfishness and mawkish sentimentality of Becky and Amelia, respectively.
