Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME PEREGRINE

Peregrine is a seriously important name in American history; and one which most people don’t know about. It was the name of the first born “American” white boy (Virginia Dare was the first born European on American soil). Apropos, Peregrine’s surname was “White” (we seriously couldn’t even make this stuff up if we tried). So the White family, William and Susanna, already had one son named Resolved. Susanna was preggers during the Mayflower voyage to Cape Cod, Massachusetts but didn’t give birth until they reached their destination (i.e., the New World). Although she actually gave birth to Peregrine on the Mayflower ship, it was anchored at port. In any case, what a perfect name. Peregrine essentially means “pilgrim”. Believe it or not, six baby boys were named Peregrine in 2012 making him the 11,804th most popular name in America. In 1620, however, Peregrine was a Top 100 favorite.
