Piper

Piper is a female given name in America. Even though we know it’s been around longer given some of her older namesakes out there, the name doesn’t actually appear on the U.S. popularity graphs for the first time until 1999. That makes Piper a very new addition to the panoply of American girl names. The name Piper debuts on the charts at position #701 – low usage, but a respectable entry nonetheless. We suspect Piper Perabo helped advance the name during a brief period of her popularity in 2000. It’s an unusual name and she’s a pretty girl, so American parents responded. In the next ten plus years, the name advances over 550 positions on the charts. Today, it’s getting closer to landing on the Top 100 list of most favored girl’s name, and we expect it will if its current trajectory sustains. The northern states have already embraced Piper, and she’s a favorite in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. These are the colder states where people are confined to the indoors longer – we think this gives them a higher appreciation for music to brighten the atmosphere. We love the name Piper for several reasons: it’s a bright, upbeat and happy name. It belongs to the “P” category of girl’s names (there aren’t many compared to overused letters like A, J, K and M) so it feels distinctively different. There are no nicknames or variations, so it stands alone and confident. And we think it’s a name of leadership – just look at the numerology connection!
