Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Ramon

Ramón is the Spanish form of the Germanic masculine name Raginmund which is derived from the elements “ragin” meaning 'advice' and “mund” meaning ‘protector’. The English version of this name is Raymond. Ramon has been a particularly popular name in Catalonia, influenced by Sant Ramon de Penyafort (Raymond of Penyafort) who was a 13th century Catalan Dominican and expert compiler, organizer and codifier of canon law. He is thus the patron saint of lawyers (especially canon law). Another important 13th century Catalan saint, Sant Ramon Nonat (English: Saint Raymond Nonnatus), is notable for a few things. He was born by caesarian section hence his surname (Nonnatus is the Latin word for “not born”) and is therefore considered one of the patron saints of childbirth and midwifery. Saint Ramon became a priest during the Moorish occupation of Iberia and spent much of his life ransoming Christian captives out of North Africa. When money ran out, Ramon offered himself as hostage, and so the Moors pad-locked his lips together to prevent him from preaching. Locks are placed at his alter still to symbolize the pledge to stop false talk and gossip, as well as to protect the secrecy of confession. Both of these medieval Saint Ramons were important to the Spanish, but particularly the Catalonians where the name remains popular. Ramona is the feminine version of this old Germanic name, and the Spanish Ramon has enjoyed a fair amount of cross-over appeal in the United States.

All About the Baby Name – Ramon

OF THE BOY NAME RAMON

The number Seven personality is deeply mystical and highly in tune with their spirituality. They operate on a different wavelength than the average joe. Spending time alone comes easily to Sevens, as it gives them time to contemplate philosophical, religious and spiritual ideas in an effort to find "real truth".  Sevens are wise, but often exude mystery as if they are tapped into something the rest of us don't understand. They love the outdoors and are fed by nature. Sevens are constantly seeking to understand human nature, our place in the universe, and the mystery of life in general. This makes them quite artistic and poetic, but they are also keen observers with high intellect - so they are equally scientific-minded. Sevens are charitable and care deeply about the human condition.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME RAMON

Ramon has maintained a position on the U.S. popularity charts consistently since 1880 (the first year the government began tracking naming trends). Not only that, but he has enjoyed respectable and moderate levels of success for decades. The name saw some of his highest usage in the 1970s which is right when the Hispanic/Latino populations were exploding across America. As we’ve crossed the threshold into the 21st century, however, Ramon has lost his footing on the charts. The name is now used sparingly and is dropping down the charts at a pretty fast rate. We’re sad to say goodbye to this simple, handsome charmer. Ramon is one of those minority cases where a Spanish name has been adopted by African-Americans and Non-Hispanic Whites, so his crossover appeal remains. Ramon is another one of those sultry, sexy and simplistically strong Spanish masculine names.
