Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Raul

Raul (or Raúl) is the Spanish, Portuguese and Italian form of the masculine personal name Ralph. The Vikings brought the name to England (pre-Norman Conquest). The Scandinavian version of the name was Ráðúlfr, derived from the Old Norse elements “ráð” meaning ‘counsel’ and “úlfr” meaning ‘wolf’. After the Norman Conquest, the French reinforced the name with their version Raulf which eventually became Ralf and then Ralph. The Portuguese and Italians typically spell Raul without the accent mark, while in Spain it’s rendered with it, as Raúl. Raúl is currently a high ranking name in Spain and Catalonia.
